I was contacted about a month ago by this family who wanted to capture some special portraits of their family and their beloved pets when one of their dogs was diagnosed with cancer. They didn’t know how much time they had left, and wanted to remember the beautiful spirit of and relationships they have with this special member of their family. I was honored and also excited because I love incorporating animals into family portraits. When I met Snowy that Thursday, I could tell what a special dog he was! So sweet and willing. Even though he had to be basically carried all over the beach! And both of these dogs were so well taken care of! We had a great time, except for (or maybe because of) the fact that I kept thinking one of the family members was named Sylvia! Sometimes I called the mom Sylvia (her name is Alicia) sometimes I called the daughter Sylvia (her name is Cindy), and sometimes I even called the border collie Sylvia. It got to be a big joke (“all right, everyone smile now – hey I don’t see Sylvia smiling”), that I found out was even funnier to them because they all new a Sylvia that no one really cared for! I spent the most time on Snowy, knowing it would likely be his last portrait session….
The next day, as I was on a camping trip with my family, I received this email from their family:
