I’ve never been a huge fan of your typical school portraits. I mean, they do a pretty good job considering how many kids they have to get through in such a short amount of time, but to me that’s never been conducive to really capturing a child’s personality. And if I’m going to have a milestone portrait every year to document how my child has grown and changed, I’d sure like it to capture the essence of who they are. In fact, that was how I actually began my photography business. When my oldest, who is now almost 13, was in his first year of preschool at age three, I really wanted to have some photos to really remember what he was like that year – and how he had grown. When his teachers saw how I did his photos, they wanted some unique photos like that of everyone in the class. And before long I was taking portraits at all of the local preschools …not your typical “stand in front of the backdrop, take one photo and move on” photos – but a whole set for parents to choose from that brought out the personality in each child. All of this was with my little Canon G2 point and shoot camera. Before I knew it I was taking family portraits and shooting weddings. But it all began with a desire to capture a more authentic school portrait.
Fast forward 10 years….and I’m thrilled to have come full circle and to offer my first set of “Back-to-School” mini session shoots. The perfect opportunity to capture the essence of your child this year as the new school year begins. For those who want a school themed shoot – I will be happy to help with adorable props and setting. And for those who just want a great excuse to update their kid’s portrait at a fraction of the cost of a full session – well, this works for you as well!
