Anatomy of a marriage proposal {Huntington Beach Engagement Photographer}

Newly engaged couple at Huntington Beach Pier

Have you ever wondered what a surprise proposal, on one of Orange County’s busiest beaches on arguably the busiest day of the year looks like? I have had the pleasure now of photographing several proposals. Most of the time I am incognito until after he pops the big question, which brings along it’s own set of challenges. Every proposal is unique and different, but each one has some common elements: a man in love with his woman, a ring, going down on one knee, and beautiful emotions displayed by both of them. None more than this sweet couple. Nick is a young marine stationed at Camp Pendleton (where my own husband was stationed) and Ashley is (was) his girlfriend – come out to visit him from Texas for the 4th of July Holiday. She had no idea what was in store. Logistically this was definitely the most difficult proposal/engagement shoot I’ve ever done. Independence Day is by far the most crowded day this beach ever sees and there were hordes of people on the beach (don’t even ask about parking!). One blessing is that it made it easier to not stand out like  sore thumb – but just in case I brought along a faux “model” as I always do so that I can have someone I am supposed to be taking photos of while I photograph the unsuspecting bride-to-be. One of my favorite things about this type of session is the completely candid nature of the photos that truly shows the flavor of a relationship and the love shared when they don’t know they are on camera.

And now comes the big moment! Dodging the many people walking in between us was the biggest challenge here….I so enjoy watching these genuine reactions : surprise, joy, awe, happiness.

And then comes the moment she discovers they are being photographed!

Then we have a small window of available light to take a few posed photos for save-the-date cards or reception display photos.

Don’t you love how adorable they are together?

Since we were already there at the beach, it was the perfect opportunity for me to watch the fireworks show from the pier. We said our farewells and headed off to find a spot on the crowded beach to catch a view of the festivities. Only to discover that we had headed to pretty much the same distant spot. So just before the show was about to start I snagged one final shot in the dark!
